Opioids: The Media is missing this: Synthetic drugs especially Fentanyl-laced drugs...

Are the leading cause for the increase in drug overdose. We saw a troubling event earlier this week - 70 kids in New Haven (primarily students) were required to go to the emergency room due to drug overdose from synthetic marijuana. Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroine and 100 times more potent than morphine. Heroin sold illegally is mixed with Fentanyl which is cheaper. Increasingly cocaine is also being contaminated with Fentanyl. This synthetic Fentanyl in illicit drugs has been reported to cause 50% of all drug-related deaths in 2016 up from 14% in 2010, with a big increase over the past 2 years. And where does Fentanyl come from? China - but likely through a circuitous route through Mexico, San Diego, and other areas. This takes us back to the bigger and more important issue - we need to increase funding for border control and ensure substances like Fentanyl are NOT making it into the country.
